Статтю присвячено проблемам мотивованості слова, встановленню мотиваційних ознак, покладених в основу номінації дорогоцінних та напівдорогоцінних каменів у латинській мові на матеріалі твору Плінія Старшого «Historia naturalis». Розглянуто обширну лексико-семантичну групу номінацій, які іменують дорогоцінні камені за різними мотиваційними ознаками. За допомогою етимологічного аналізу визначено мотивованість термiнів. У ході дослідження встановлено, що створення лексики на позначення дорогоцінних та напівдорогоцінних каменів відбувалось здебільшого внаслідок метафоричного перенесення за зовнішньою ознакою кольору. / The article deals with the problems of word motivation, establishment of motivational attributes, which are the basis for the nomination of precious and semiprecious stones in Latin, using the “Historia naturalis” written by Pliny the Elder as a base source for the research. It is considered an extensive lexico­semantic group of nominations, which give names to precious and semiprecious stones through different motiva­tional attributes. By means of etymological analysis, the motivation of terms is determined. The study found that the creation of vocabulary indicating precious and semiprecious stones occurred mainly as a result of metaphorical transfer by the external feature of color.
